Emigration

The town of Brè sopra Lugano has only had road connection with the city of Lugano since 1912 and since it does not have resources, at that time there was little possibility to find work.
So bricklayers and farmers have no choice but to emigrate. Some emigrants established themselves as hoteliers.

Algeria, France, North America and South America, but especially the United States are the most common destinations. Later on, given the progress and building development, it is possible to find work within Switzerland (German and French) and also in Ticino as workers helping with the construction of the Gandria gallery and the bridge-dam of Melide.
The largest groups of people leave between 1850-1880 and 1910-1930. Many families establish themselves in the inner part of Switzerland, Algeria, France, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, etc.

Looking at the landing documents and registration documents at the immigration office on Ellis Island, New York, we can see that many different people from Brè sopra Lugano emigrate to America as these documents show various family names from this town: Bonzi, Caratti, Demarchi, Gianini, Gilardi, Malacrida, Monti, Pedrotta, Prati, Raselli, Sabbioni, Taddei, etc.
