The Wilhelm Schmid (1892-1971) Museum is located in the town of Brè sopra Lugano. It is by will of his wife, Maria Schmid, that the house where the artist lived was given to the City of Lugano with a part of his works and his library. In the intention of the estate, the house could have also become a study centre for artists.
Today, thanks to the City of Lugano’s support, it is a small museum that has kept the atmosphere that surrounded the artist intact. Therefore, it is an example of “total work” that shows the works of art created by Wilhelm Schmid and also tries to re-create the environment where the artist worked and lived.
The painter is a major exponent of the artistic and cultural movement known as “New Objectivity”, a type of German painting after Expressionism, created in Germany during the 1920s before the advent of Nazism. This group includes names like Otto Dix, Georg Grosz and Christian Schad, Conrad Felixmüller, Rudolf Schlichter and Max Beckmann. However, Wilhelm Schmid is an artist that gives its characters more romantic and less aggressive tones, following a poetic current inspired by everyday little things.
